ALINA LEE WINS WWGA JUNIOR TITLE

At The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club in Fishers, Indiana, Alina Lee, who turned 14 on June 25, beat Amanda Blumenherst, Scottsdale, Arizona, 2 up in the finals of the Women’s Western Golf Association’s (WWGA) 78th National Junior Tournament.   Board Members of the WWGA speculate that Alina may possibly be the youngest winner in the long history of the event.

The match seesawed until the 17th hole.  Lee took a 1 up lead after parring the 2nd hole.  Blumenherst came back with birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes to take a 1 up lead.  Lee birdied hole #8 to square the match.  On #11, Blumenherst’s birdie gave her a 1 up lead.   Lee answered with a birdie on #12.   Blumenherst took #14 and lost on #16 when Lee birdied.   Blumenherst’s drive on #17 ended  up in the water, and Lee made par to take a 1 up lead.  The 18th hole, which both girls thought was the hardest on the course, went to Lee’s par when  Blumenherst’s 2nd shot ended up in an environmentally sensitive area left of the green.

After the match, Lee said:  “I knew there was a chance I could beat Amanda.   I just had to hang in there.   When I took the lead on #16, I knew if I kept focused I could pull it out.   I love this tournament and am very happy to be the winner.”  Lee was a semifinalist in last year’s WWGA National Junior at the Sugar Mill Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Lee took up golf a few weeks before her 10th birthday.  Her family had moved to Florida from the Boston area where she was born.  She played tennis and figure skated as a youngster but fell in love with golf.   She and  her parents have recently relocated to Augusta, Georgia, where she will work with Golf Professional David Goolsby at The International Golf Academy.

Sandra Fullmer, President of the WWGA, was happy about how the week had gone.  “Everyone involved did a great job, especially the staff and members of The Hawthorns who provided such a wonderful venue for these young players.   The girls met the challenge with some fabulous golf and we, as a board, only look forward to them getting better and better and coming back and play in our tournament again next summer.”

The WWGA sponsors three tournaments each year.  Their National Amateur Championship was held at The Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison, Wisconsin in June.  Their National Senior Championship is scheduled to be contested at The Sunriver Resort, Sunriver, Oregon, September 27-29.

An outgrowth of the WWGA is the Women’s Western Golf Foundation which provides college scholarships to about 80 women annually.  For further information about these tournaments and the Foundation, contact their website  at www.wwga.org.
